Book 2 — Chapter 11 — Theudas and His Followers
Eusebius quotes Yosephus concerning Theudas, who persuaded a large group to follow him to the Yarden, claiming he could divide the river and enable them to cross. Roman cavalry under the governor Fadus attacks the movement, killing many, capturing others, and bringing Theudas's head to Yerushalayim. Eusebius relates the incident to the warning attributed to Gamaliel in Acts about failed popular leaders. The chronology between Acts and Yosephus has long produced discussion; Eusebius himself does not develop the later critical problem. His concern is to show a succession of claimants and popular movements arising amid unstable conditions in Yehudah.
