Book 10 — Chapter 9 - Constantine's Victory and the Benefits that Followed
Book X celebrates restoration after persecution, records imperial laws and privileges, and closes with Constantine's victory and Eusebius's providential interpretation of the new imperial order. The account is strongly shaped by Eusebius's political theology: military victory and legal toleration are interpreted as providential reversal. The underlying decrees and political events should still be distinguished from Eusebius's theological judgment of them. In this reconstruction the chapter coordinate is preserved as Book 10, Chapter 9, and the full subject is retained under the heading 'Constantine's Victory and the Benefits that Followed'. Names, dates, quoted-source relationships, and political or textual function are kept distinct from Eusebius's own interpretive claims. Public Provenance Ledger Greek: Eusebius composed the work in Koine Greek. The ten-book architecture reaches from the apostolic age to Constantine and the defeat of Licinius. Syriac: Two ancient Syriac manuscripts preserve the History; one is dated 462 CE. The Syriac version must therefore be treated as an exceptionally early Eastern control and not as a secondary curiosity. Armenian: An early Armenian version was translated from Syriac and provides another major Eastern witness to the text. Latin: Rufinus translated and adapted Eusebius into Latin and continued the narrative. Rufinus is useful reception evidence but is not the master text for this reconstruction. Book VIII appendix: The Martyrs of Palestine exists in more than one form and is closely connected with Eusebius's treatment of the Great Persecution. It is retained separately rather than silently fused into the numbered chapters of Book VIII. Historiographic lock: Quotations from Yosephus, Hegesippus, Papias, Irenaeus, Dionysius, imperial rescripts, martyr letters, and other now-lost sources are treated as embedded witnesses with their own provenance. Eusebius's interpretation is not allowed to erase the quoted witness. Corpus note: This volume preserves every standard chapter coordinate of Books I-X and the full Appendix coordinate set. It is constructed in fresh English rather than copied from a public-domain English translation.
